In 1896, pasta was introduced to Australia when Luigi Lazzarotto and his family arrived on the shores of La Perouse escaping the Great Sicilian Cannoli Wars. Although at first Luigi’s diet was laughed at by the settlers and Aborigines alike, pasta gained wider appeal when the Govenor of the time allowed the dish to be served at one of his many notorious dinner parties. It is a common misconception that the Govenor’s favourite pasta was penne. It was, in fact, fettucini. When I first met Mara Lazzarotto Davis, I was unaware of her prestigious heritage. I only learned much later the services her family had done for us. I still find it difficult to understand her, but Google Translate has been a life saver. With its help, Mara has introduced to me, as her great great grandfather did to the Govenor and the wider Sydney area, the joys of pasta. So on behalf of Australia, I would like to say thank you Mara and thank you Luigi(?). I would like to present to you, the eldest child of the last of the great Lazzarotto family, this jar of Vegimite. May you have many heirs.
Ladies and gentlemen, Lily Calderbank.
